These six verses, composed by Shankara at the age of eight, convey the timeless insights of self-realization.

According to Shankara's life history, he left home at eight when his mother permitted him to become a sanyasi. During his northward journey, he reached the swollen Narmada River. Shankara placed his water pot (kamandalu) in the river and prayed, "If I am worthy of going ahead, please allow me to pass." Miraculously, the river emptied into his water pot, allowing him to cross. Once on the other side, he reversed his kamandalu, flooding the river again.

The great master Govindapada witnessed this extraordinary event and asked Shankara, "Son, who are you?" In response, Shankara recited these six verses, revealing the profound understanding of the true inner Self. Later, Shankara's commentaries on texts like the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita solidified his influence, while the Nirvana Shatakam continues to serve as a guide for self-realization.

In this book, Ram conveys Shankara's genius in a way that brings spiritual intelligence into our daily lives. Kant famously declares that human reason must deny knowledge to make room for faith. Although theoretical reason cannot offer cognition of God or proof of God's existence, practical consideration can justify a belief, at least for moral action, that there is a Wise, Benevolent, and Just Providence ordering the world. Morality requires us to set an end that theoretical reason gives us insufficient grounds to believe is attainable. We are thus threatened with an incoherence between our practical volition and our justified beliefs and assertions about the world. The only reasonable way to resolve this practical problem regarding the possibility of the highest good is to go beyond what theoretical reason can affirm about this idea and postulate to the existence of its object.

About the Author:

ARUP JYOTI SARMA is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Tripura University, Tripura, India. As such, it has much to teach us about the early development of ideas in this difficult and technical area which spans Indology and the history of linguistics. While the author does not admit it explicitly, he borrows heavily from Patañjali's Mahābhāşya, but often changes or disregards the original purpose of these borrowed arguments. The discussions in the Vyādīyaparibhāṣāvṛtti are, in turn, typical of those used by later commentators, and the present book traces the development of these lines of thought from Patanjali in the third century BC to Nägeśa in the seventeenth century.

About the Author

Dominik Wujastyk : was born in London is He currently holds the Singhmar Chair in Classical Indian Society and Polity at the University of Alberta, He has active research interests in the social and intellectual history of pre-colonial India, the early history of yoga philosophy and practice, and traditions of debate in India.
