Mohiniyattam: A Reader stands out as an exceptionally well-edited collection of writings on Mohiniyattam—a classical dance form from Kerala. Sensitive to both its past and present, as well as to the practice and theoretical constructs of this reinvented art form, the editors of the two volumes have compiled contributions from academics and practitioners. These essays form a fascinating and well-planned mosaic of ideas, addressing questions of historical continuity, national and regional identity, and critical engagement with aesthetics.

The volumes also delve into intersectional themes such as cultural policies, caste, religion, and gender—areas often neglected in existing literature on Mohiniyattam. This timely collection is a welcome addition to the body of published material on Indian dance.

Review

"The volumes also delve into intersectional themes such as cultural policies,. caste, religion, and gender-areas often neglected in existing literature on Mohiniyattam. This timely collection is a welcome addition to the body of published material on Indian dance."- URMIMALA SARKAR MUNSI, Professor and Dean, School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi

"What is most refreshing about this book is that it places practitioners and their experiences at the very center of scholarly discourse on dance, leaving little doubt about the true owners of artistic practice. A brilliant assemblage of practitioner voices spanning several generations in Mohiniyattam, this book is essential reading for students and practitioners of dance alike."- M.V. NARAYANAN, Vice Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala Former Professor of English, University of Calicut, Kerala

"This rich and sparkling collection of essays on Mohiniyattam is an exceptional combination of perspectives from scholars and practitioners. It offers a remarkable set of essays on the form, its multiple trajectories, innovations, and histories, making it a one-of-a-kind comprehensive reader on the subject and a significant contribution to Indian Dance Studies."- PALLABI CHAKRAVORTY, Stephen Lang Professor of Performing Arts/Dance, Swarthmore College, USA

"A valuable resource for students and teachers, this book is carefully arranged and meticulously organized. Both dancers and academics will find it enriching for their study of Mohiniyattam."- ANITA R. RATNAM, Performer and Scholar
